Our Mission

Short-staffing hurts healthcare workers, facilities and patients. Fixing that is our mission.

As many as 90% of registered nurses have considered quitting the profession next year if critical workplace issues like short-staffing aren’t resolved, according to this study. This crisis touches us all, because we all need healthcare.

Clipboard Health exists to solve the problem of short-staffed facilities and to lift as many people up the socio-economic ladder as possible. To do this, we've created an efficient and transparent marketplace for healthcare facilities and healthcare professionals to fill shifts.

Our Engineering Culture

Our mission is to maintain seed-stage speed as we grow, and to solve harder and harder problems.

We have a culture of removing roadblocks. Every engineering hire is chosen because we trust them enough to give them responsibility. We make sure that CBH team members empower each other by building a culture of helpfulness. If someone else’s input is needed to get unblocked, we make sure that happens same day.

Your First 90 Days

You are probably expecting a list of all the things you are likely going to do during your first 90 days at Clipboard Health.

Instead, we are presenting you with the feedback we would like to give you during your first 90 day review. To give you a bit more context, at Clipboard Health we are doing performance reviews every 3 months as one of the main foundations for your growth path.

We actually write those 90 day reviews even before we consider opening the role to create alignment within our teams.

  • What are the expectations?
  • Why are we opening this role?
  • How do we assess talent during the interview process?
  • And how are we going to measure if people are successful in their role?

Hopefully, this section will be giving you a lot of details on what is expected from you as you start your journey at Clipboard Health. We would love if you will managed to hit all those boxes. Many of them are going to be really challenging, but this is how we reach our really high standards here at Clipboard Health.

Your first 90 day review

Congratulations on earning a 3: solidly performed. Our expectations are high and 3’s are above our company wide average.

In the last 90 days, you have:

Improved engineering productivity (DORA) metrics for our releases - you increased our deployment frequency to 1 release per day per day for our monolithic codebase by shifting left our QA work and increasing our smoke and regression testing automation. By freeing-up more time for our QA Engineers to do exploratory testing, you also reduced our Change Failure Rate on new features by 25%.
Reduce the number of support cases by 20% by working with our customer support team to prioritize outstanding quality issues in our product and suggesting UX improvements. You translated the needs from the customer support team into product improvements, and worked with the Product Managers to prioritize them in our roadmap.
Stepped in directly to write code with your team, across 6 Pull Requests, to improve the feedback loops between our testing framework and our engineering teams. You demonstrated that though coding isn’t a regular part of your day-to-day, when push comes to shove, you’re still one of the best IC engineers on the team.
Contributed to engineering wide hiring efforts by interviewing 6 engineers per week, conducting technical interviews focused on live coding exercises, behavioural interviews focused on candidates’ experiences in software delivery and quality, as well as evaluating their alignment with our company values. You also updated our technical assessments to make them shorter but tougher, delivering a more competitive candidate experience while raising the bar on engineering excellence.
Raised the quality of engineering output within your team by conducting 45 code reviews in your team and 6 technical design document reviews, providing feedback on best patterns and practices to achieve better quality, testability, performance and reliability in our systems.
Provided regular written feedback for the 8 members of your team, 2x per month per person. In doing so, you identified and coached one IC engineer to step into a Lead role on the new team you spun up. With another engineer, you identified performance issues, and built a SMART plan to set clear expectations and a training program to quickly get them back on track.

Your Future Team

Your team is yet to be built, and it’s on you to decide what kind of people and resources you will need to accomplish your mission of increasing quality excellence in Clipboard’s engineering team while spreading the mindset to the whole company.

Your team isn’t limited to your functional group and grows with everyone who successfully adopts your new quality mindset.

Meet your Hiring Manager, Charles

image

Four years ago, I co-founded a start-up and from then until recently I worked there in the capacity of CTO and founder.

We had a rocky start (like a lot of startups!), but just in the last four or five months found product-market fit.

At the same time, we got a team in place that can execute by themselves, which freed me up to do more and look at new opportunities.”

Your Ideal Background

You like fast-moving startups, having worked at one or more before
You’ve managed fully remote teams, operating in multiple time zones
You’ve built QA process for backend and frontend applications, on mobile and web using tools like: TestRail, webdriver.io, POSTman, and no-code UI automation tools like reflect.run or testproject.io
Experience in security testing (Simulate XSS, CSRF etc. using tools like Charles Proxy or Burpsuite)
Experience in performance testing (Responsiveness, page load time, UI thread blocks, slow network conditions simulation, CPU/Memory footprint via iStats, Instruments, Valgrind etc. across hardware generations, Load test tools)
Experience in visual testing (Absent elements, Form factor/layout bugs via snapshot testing)

Interview Process

1. Application Review

We’re seeking experienced and zealous QA Engineering Managers who have led engineering teams to test for products that deliver uniquely tailored experiences for each user. We find ourselves needing to make a lot of technical decisions all of the time, and we’d love to hear the details of how you have done this in your past and recent experience.

This first step of the interview process is sharing in written form how you’ve built, managed and scaled teams focused on quality aspects of Engineering.

2. Short take-home test (˜1h)

In engineering and quality, we go directly to a short take-home test. We front-load this in the process because it’s often a make-or-break step, and we want to make the best use of your time before putting you through a series of interviews. This take-home test gives you a quick description of our product and architecture and asks you to outline a QA strategy for it.

3. Team Interviews

Once the take-home test is cleared, we immediately put you in an interview with a few team members followed by an interview with a hiring manager.

In those interviews you will:

  • Get hands-on during a live coding session (1st interview)
  • Have a follow-up discussion on the QA Strategy you submitted in your take-home test (2nd interview)

In the Hiring Manager interview:

  • Dig deep into a technical problem you’ve encountered in the past, and how you’ve approached it
  • Talk about how you lead and manage teams, approach hiring, and build high-performance culture for teams delivering high quality at unreasonable speed

Usually, we manage to get all of these interviews done in just a matter of days.

4. Leadership Interview

We set very high standards for all leaders at Clipboard Health. In this interview with Bo, our COO, you’ll discuss in detail topics including:

  • How you set standards for your team, and how your team should be measured by other stakeholders
  • What defines the best engineers in your teams
  • Talk about a time you had to manage an underperformer
  • How you grow your team members into leaders
  • What your team depends on you to do as an engineering manager
  • How you specifically assess other engineering manager candidates

5. Offer

If everything looks good at that point, we make an offer as soon as we can - often same-day.

FAQ

What is your culture like?

The culture of a company comes down to what you reward.

At Clipboard Health, we reward speed, a focus on the customer, and the ability to write clearly. We reward curiosity, initiative and ownership. We reward honest, constructive criticism, and the ability to have hard conversations.

Can I work remote?

Yes, off course! In fact you have to 😃. We are

, don’t have an office and probably never be owning one.

What about the timezone offsets/working hours?

There’s no silver bullet answer, and it mostly comes down to which teams you will work with. We try to build teams that are co-located timezone wise, but expect everyone to have at least a few hours of overlap with the PST timezone for company meetings (even if we keep those minimal). Aside from this, you’re free to organize your time at your own will, as long as your online presence is predictable and people know how/when they can reach you.

Do you expect Engineering Managers to be hands-on?

Yes, our standard for leaders at Clipboard is that all of them should be excellent individual contributors. Realistically, you will not spend more than 5-10% of your time doing IC work, but that 5 - 10 % will matter.

How are teams structured at Clipboard?

We work in Engineering pods, composed by 2-6 engineers, at least one SDET and a Product Manager. Those Engineering Pods are attached to Product Groups, working on solving specific customer problems for workers, workplaces, or the marketplace itself.

How often do you release to production?

For our largest part of the codebase, we release to production twice a week. For our mobile apps, the updates are slightly less frequent to avoid “spamming updates”. Newer products/microservices have their own release schedule and often ship more than once a week.
